At the UN General Assembly and New York Climate Week, the Business Council for International Understanding hosted an event dedicated to “The Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils (VACS): Improving Food Security at the Nexus of Climate, Land Degradation, and Biodiversity” on September 23rd, 2024. At this event, VACS strove to bring stakeholders together to address major planetary issues and sustain agriculture’s essential societal contributions to mitigating climate change, restoring degraded lands, conserving biodiversity, creating more resilient food systems and improving food security.
Dr. Lal was honored to join colleagues Ismahane Elouafi, Executive Managing Director, CGIAR, and Alison Taylor, Chief Sustainability Officer, ADM, as panelists to discuss the theme of “Harvesting Resilience: VACS and the Linkages Between Food Security, Climate, Land Degradation, and Biodiversity,” moderated by Alzbeta Klien, Chief Executive Officer, Director General, International Fertilizer Association.
The event also honored Dr. Cary Fowler, Special Envoy for Global Food Security, at the Office of Global Food Security, U.S. Department of State as the next recipient of the World Food Prize. Dr. Lal was so pleased to collaborate with his fellow attendees on these important matters for our collective future.
