The Lal Carbon Center commends our colleagues who presented at the American Geophysical Union 24 Annual Meeting from December 9 - 13th, 2024. The annual event, with the 2024 theme of "What's Next for Science?" was well attended, with over 27,000 scientists, researchers, policymakers, and others present. In a session facilitated by co-convener Dr. Klaus Lorenz entitled “Fowler, A., Schimel, D., Del Grosso, S.J., Lorenz, K., & Jennewein, J. (2024). Integrative Biogeochemistry for Managing Climate and Soil Health on Working Lands. [Oral / Poster Presentations] B41K,” C-FARM Co-PIs Dr. Umakant Mishra, Dr. Asmita Murumkar, and Dr. Jennifer Reeve and their teams represented the C-FARM project there.
On December 12th, Dr. Murumkar presented a poster entitled Evaluating the Reliability of Farm-scale Soil Carbon Prediction Decision Tools for Carbon Farming and Soil Health. From 9:00 am - 12:00 pm, she spoke with 25 - 30 visitors interested in the results of her research. Her audience, which occasionally formed a line to wait to speak with her, included representatives of the USDA soil research division, a member of the World Bank, and many other univerisity faculty and students. Dr. Murumkar was very happy with the response and interest that she received from everyone that she was able to connect with at the conference.
Dr. Jennifer Reeve and her team gave a presentation as well on December 12th titled Soil Carbon Response to Farm Management and Soil Type on Working Farms in Cache Valley, Utah. Her talk provided an overview of the objectives of the C-FARM project as well as additional details about the research that her team at Utah State is carrying out for it. On Friday, December 13th, Dr. Umakant Mishra's team presented as well, giving a talk entitled Integrating machine learning with agroecosystem model to predict biomass yield and soil carbon dynamics under Changing Climate.
We are very excited at the interest and excellent reception the preliminary results of the project are receiving from our colleagues, and we look forward to further developments in the next two years of the project.
